It was only four short years ago that Subaru joined the EV fray with the all-new Solterra. Earlier this year, the brand added the compact Uncharted and powerful Trailseeker to its EV portfolio, and now another electric Subaru is on the way. Debuting this past April at the New York Auto Show,  the all-new Getaway is the largest and most powerful production Subaru ever offered in America.

The new Getaway is a midsize three-row crossover SUV with seating for up to seven and a powerful electric drivetrain, making it an ideal vehicle to get away with the whole family. With the introduction of the Getaway, Subaru will offer a full range of electric crossover SUVs.

Subaru’s electric vehicle lineup was developed in partnership with Toyota, with varying levels of input from both companies, and each Subaru model has a corresponding Toyota version. The new Getaway shares its underpinnings with the recently introduced Toyota Highlander and will be produced at Toyota’s Kentucky production facility. However, exterior styling distinguishes the two models, and the Subaru comes standard with AWD and delivers almost 100 more horsepower than the Toyota.

Like almost every other Subaru SUV, the Getaway comes standard with Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. The dual-motor electric drivetrain delivers 420 horsepower with equally powerful motors front and rear, and that should be enough to move this three-row crossover to 60 mph in less than five seconds. The Getaway can also tow up to 3,500 pounds, adding to its versatility.

While it’s still too early to get EPA efficiency ratings, Subaru expects the Getaway to offer more than 300 miles of range from its 95.8-kWh lithium-ion battery, on par with most rivals in this market. A NACS (North American Charging Standard) charge port is standard, giving owners access to more than 25,000 Tesla Superchargers across North America. With a max charging speed of 150 kW, the battery can go from 10 to 80 percent charge in about 30 minutes. An on-board battery preconditioning system ensures that cold weather doesn’t affect charging speed. Subaru plans to offer a less expensive standard-range battery (77.0 kWh) in the first half of 2027.

The Subaru Getaway shares many of its styling cues with the rest of Subaru’s EV lineup. Most noticeable are the slim LED running lights, headlights integrated into the bodywork, and the illuminated Subaru logo front and center. The Getaway doesn’t have any of the cladding found on the rest of the brand’s EVs – instead, it has sculpted fenders with an angled blade design element at the bottom of the front doors, giving it a more upscale look.

The larger rear fenders are most noticeable when viewing the Getaway from the rear, and the width is further emphasized by the taillights that span the tailgate below the window. There will be no mistaking the Getaway for the Toyota Highlander, thanks to the large SUBARU spelled out between the taillights.

While the Subaru Trailseeker, Uncharted, and Solterra all have almost identical dashboard designs, the Getaway introduces a new look for the brand. A 14-inch central touchscreen display is standard on all trim levels, as is the 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster. The setup is more traditional, with the driver display placed behind the steering wheel rather than up high on the dashboard, as in the other three Subaru EVs – a welcome change. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard with wireless connectivity, and higher trims feature a premium Harman Kardon audio system.

Front Seats in the Getaway come with StarTex or Nappa leather trim, depending on the trim level. Heated front seats are standard, while a heated steering wheel and ventilated seats are available on higher trim levels. Two wireless phone chargers are in the center console, flanking the uniquely styled gear selector. Plenty of storage is available with large cupholders, a large open space below the center console, and a sizeable bin beneath the center armrest.

The Getaway comes standard with 6-passenger seating – two in the second-row captain’s chairs, and two more in the third row. Seven-passenger seating with a second-row bench seat is available on the Limited trim. Second-row seats share the same style as those up front and can recline or slide forward/aft. Passengers will find good legroom and headroom with available seat heating, making the second row a desirable place to ride.

Access to the third row is relatively easy – the second row folds out of the way with the push of a button. Once in, the third row is a bit cramped, with tight legroom, but second-row passengers can take pity on their seatmates and slide their seats forward for some extra space. The third-row seat can be heated and power-reclined, with integrated cupholders and USB ports to ease the burden of being relegated to the third row.

Open the large rear hatch, and you’ll find 15.9 cubic feet of space behind the third row, more than enough for a few pieces of luggage or a trip to the grocery store. Additional space below the floor is ideal for storing a charging cable or other items you’d like kept secure and out of sight. Pressing a button in the cargo area lowers the left and/or right third-row seat, expanding the space to a competitive 45.6 cubic feet.

Every Subaru Getaway comes standard with the brand’s EyeSight suite of advanced driver-assist systems. These include automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, adaptive cruise control, lane departure alert, blind spot monitoring, Traffic Jam Assist, Emergency Stop Assist, and lane change assist. Higher trims are also available with front cross-traffic alert and a digital rear-view mirror.
