New SUVs for 2015 — And Beyond

© Ford Motor CompanyUnmatched Versatility
Sport-utility vehicles make up one of the most popular automotive segments in America — for good reasons. Considering the wide range of vehicles available, the SUV category offers unmatched versatility, making it an appropriate choice for a variety of consumers. Sport utes can haul the family, carry large amounts of cargo, tow trailers and handle adverse road conditions — a rare few can adeptly perform all these things simultaneously. Here’s an overview of new SUVs in the U.S., either on sale now or coming soon to a showroom near you.

The RDX also gets a new 3.5-liter V6 engine that offers a modest boost in horsepower — to 279 horses — as well as improved fuel efficiency. Available high-tech features include rain-sensing wipers, remote start, a blind spot warning system and a rear cross-traffic monitor.

On Sale: Spring 2016
Although the vehicle’s debut is a year out, we had a sneak peek at the next-generation Audi Q7 at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show. With new exterior styling as well as an updated interior, the Q7 retains similar exterior dimensions but offers up more headroom, shoulder room and legroom inside. The interior features clean, simple lines with less buttons and more technology controls, including a modular infotainment system and Audi virtual cockpit. Offered with standard quattro all-wheel drive, the 2016 Q7 will be powered by either a new 3.0-liter V6 TDI clean diesel or a 3.0-liter TFSI gas engine when it goes on sale in the first quarter of 2016. Whatever you call it, the X3 is one of the sportier small crossovers on the market and enters its third generation for 2015. The new vehicle has subtle styling updates to distinguish it from the outgoing version, but overall the exterior look is now more in line with the rest of the BMW family. Three different engines are available, including a powerful and fuel-efficient diesel option on the xDrive28d. Also new for 2015 is the availability of rear-wheel drive on the sDrive28i.

All X4s feature BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system as well as an 8-speed automatic transmission. Under the hood, buyers have a choice of either a 240-horsepower turbocharged 4-cylinder engine or a 6-cylinder unit putting out 300 horsepower. The ride height gets lowered 10 mm from the standard X6, and 21-inch M light-alloy wheels complete the look. In keeping with all BMW M products, there’s more to the x6 M than merely hot styling. A new 4.4-liter M TwinPower Turbo V8 engine produces 567 horsepower and peak torque of 553 lb-ft — the most powerful engine developed by BMW for an all-wheel-drive vehicle. The 500X stays true to the brand, with styling matching the rest of the 500 lineup and a size not much larger than the original 500. Two engines are available on the new 500X — a 160-horsepower 1.4-liter turbo or a larger 2.4-liter engine putting out 180 horsepower. Of course the 500X is available with AWD; the advanced system disconnects the rear axle when not needed, with the intent of improving fuel economy.

2016 Honda Pilot
Price: TBA

Price: TBA
On Sale: Fall 2015
An all-new Hyundai Tucson is expected to debut at the New York Auto Show in April, but journalists got a sneak peek in Geneva when the new crossover debuted for the European market. The most obvious change to the small crossover is the grille — big and bold, it contains echoes of the grille on the luxurious Genesis. Not only does the Tucson get a new look, the interior has been updated with new features and better space utilization. Since there are significant differences in engines and packages for products sold in the U.S. versus overseas, we’ll have to wait until next month to get more details on this popular crossover.

Price: Starting at $37,070
On Sale: Spring 2015
The Land Rover Discovery was sold in America until 2004 when it was rebadged as the LR3. No matter its name, the SUV was boxy and while very capable still felt a bit old school. For 2015 the Discovery name is back — this time on a thoroughly modern SUV with styling that fits with the rest of the Land Rover lineup and capability deserving of the Discovery name. Discovery Sport has seating for seven occupants and carries a number of premium features such as an 8-inch touchscreen and head-up display. As expected, the Discovery Sport has impressive off-road capabilities — more than 8 inches of ground clearance, class-leading approach and departure angles, the ability to wade through almost 2 feet of water and climb a 45-degree incline.

© Mercedes-Benz USA2015 Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe
Price: TBA
On Sale: Late Summer 2015
It’s hard to determine if the GLE Coupe belongs on this list. The current M-Class will be renamed GLE in the near future, so GLE is clearly an SUV line. However, the GLE Coupe is bit odd in that it really isn’t an SUV and, for that matter, it has four doors so it really isn’t a coupe. Perhaps all this is best explained by Board Member Responsible for Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development Prof. Dr. Thomas Weber who says, “Our GLE Coupé combines typical coupé attributes, such as sportiness, dynamism and agility, with the confident presence, versatility and robustness of an SUV.” (Perhaps not.) All GLE Coupes will be well equipped and feature Mercedes’ 4Matic all-wheel drive system. Two versions will be sold — the GLE450 and GLE63 AMG, the latter getting a 577-horsepower biturbo V8 engine.

© Nissan North America2015 Nissan Murano
Price: Starting at $29,560
On Sale: Now
Nissan’s Murano enters its third generation as one of the most stylish crossovers on the market. The design is based heavily on the Resonance Concept that was shown in Detroit a few years ago, and features a bold grille, “boomerang” headlights and — with its blacked-out pillars — floating roof. Many of these design elements will likely be seen on future Nissan products. Inside, drivers will find a large information and control center with an available 8-inch color touchscreen. In an effort to simplify controls, the number of audio and navigation switches has been reduced by 60 percent — from 25 to 10 — for a less distracting experience. An available power panoramic moonroof makes the Murano feel larger inside.

© Porsche Cars North America2015 Porsche Cayenne
Price: Starting at $61,700
On Sale: Now
In 2003 many Porsche loyalists felt the introduction of the Cayenne SUV would water down the German brand, but with more than 500,000 copies sold since its launch, it seems the concern was unwarranted. The 2015 Cayenne is all new; however, the exterior changes are subtle. With an updated front fascia, hood and tail, the Cayenne has a wider, more aggressive stance. The high-performance SUV gets a number of new standard features, including Bi-Xenon headlights, HD Radio, an automatic tailgate and a multi-function steering wheel based on the one found in Porsche’s exotic 918 Spyder. Cayenne is available with four engine options at launch, including a diesel, a twin-turbo V6 in the S, a 4.8-liter twin-turbo V8 in the Turbo, and a 416-horsepower hybrid system in the Cayenne S E-Hybrid. The GTS and Turbo S join the lineup later as 2016 models.

Stats are impressive, especially for a compact SUV — the S reaches 60 mph in around five seconds, while the Turbo manages the same feat in just 4.4 seconds. Macan comes standard with an impressive list of equipment, and can also include an available air suspension system as well as the Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus system, which distributes varying levels of torque to the rear wheels.
