Whenever we create a list of top vehicles, readers look to see if their car is mentioned, lending some credence to their choice. However, if your car is on this list it means it’s not only popular with buyers, it’s a favorite of those who have chosen a different method for obtaining their wheels — stealing them. With the help of the National Insurance Crime Bureau’s “Hot Wheels” report, we present the vehicle most popular with car thieves in each state, based on thefts that took place in 2014.

Alabama
1999 Chevrolet Silverado
Thieves in this Southern state have a preference for pickup trucks. In addition to this classic Chevrolet workhorse, full-size trucks from Ford, Dodge and GMC are among the 10 vehicles most often reported to the NICB as stolen property in Alabama.

Alaska
2003 Chevrolet Silverado
Chevrolet Silverados were stolen just a few more times than Ford F-150s in this northernmost state. However, not every thief was after a truck — Honda Civics and Accords from the 1990s were also popular targets in 2014.

Arizona
1997 Honda Accord
The weather isn’t the only thing hot in the state of Arizona — so are late 1990s Honda Accords.
Arizona thieves follow the national trend with their preference for Accord, followed closely by the 1998 Honda Civic. Ten-year-old trucks from the Big Three domestic-brand automakers are also quite popular in this Mountain West state.

Arkansas
1995 Chevrolet Pickup
Trucks are the most popular target by far in Arkansas — full-size pickups from Chevrolet, Ford, GMC and Dodge are the top four vehicles reported to the NICB as stolen in the 25th state to join the union.

1996 Honda Accord
It’s no surprise that one of the best-selling cars in America would top the thievery chart in the most populous state in the country. Mid-1990s Hondas are apparently easier to steal than the more current (1997 – present) models, which have smartkey anti-theft technology.

Colorado
1997 Honda Civic
One might expect an SUV or truck would be a thief’s choice in this mountainous state, but the compact Civic is most stolen in Colorado. That said, full-size trucks from Ford and Chevy — as well as the Jeep Grand Cherokee — are in the top five.

Connecticut
1997 Honda Accord
It’s Honda Accord for the win again — called out as most stolen in this small northeastern state. Import sedans are certainly popular among thieves in The Constitution State: Six of the top 10 stolen cars are sedans from Honda, Nissan and Toyota.

Delaware
1999 Honda Civic
Car thieves did not seem to have much success in Delaware last year. The compact Honda Civic was at the top of the NICB list of stolen vehicles, but only 64 were reported missing in this small East Coast state.

Florida
2006 Ford F-150
The best way to tote all your toys to the beach in The Sunshine State? A big truck, which could be the reason the full-size Ford F-150 is so popular among owners and thieves in Florida — total Ford trucks stolen is double the second-most-stolen vehicle, the Honda Civic.

Georgia
1996 Honda Accord
As with so many other states, Georgia car thieves have a penchant for the Honda Accord — specifically the 1996 model. Trucks from Chevrolet and Ford are also quite popular among criminals in the Peach State.

Hawaii
2000 Honda Civic
Car thieves in this island state seemingly have limited inventory from which to choose, but they still managed to steal more than 300 Honda Civics in 2014. The early 1990s Honda Accord wasn’t far behind in total cars stolen.

Rugged Idaho seems the proper place for plenty of trucks to be owned, driven and — unfortunately — pilfered, and car thefts support that. Six of the ten most stolen vehicles in this mountainous state are trucks, led by the full-size Chevrolet Silverado.

2000 Dodge Caravan
Call it regional loyalty, but domestic vehicles seem to be a bit more popular among car thieves in the Midwest, and in Illinois it’s the Dodge Caravan that leads the most-stolen list. More than 1,000 of these popular people movers were pinched in 2014.

Not only do car nappers in the Hoosier State favor the big Chevrolet Silverado, surprisingly they’re not that interested in Hondas or Toyotas. In fact, none of the 10 most-stolen cars in Indiana are imports. How’s that for being All-American?

Big trucks are a staple of Iowa farms, so it should come as no surprise that the same big pickups are popular targets among thieves. The Chevrolet Silverado leads the pack, followed closely by the Ford F-Series and Dodge Ram.

The Chevrolet Silverado and Ford F-150 are running neck and neck in Kentucky. But the top truck of this race doesn’t win any derby — it simply means it’s been pilfered more times than any other truck or car in the state.

Folks in Southern states certainly love their trucks. Unfortunately, so do car thieves. The Ford F-150 is the most popular target, followed closely by the Chevrolet Silverado and Dodge Ram.

If you want to hold onto your vehicle, Maine may be the place to be. Although the Chevrolet Silverado was stolen more times last year than any other vehicle in this Northeastern state, the total taken and reported to the NICB was a mere 26.

Maryland has one of the highest median household incomes in the United States, so you would expect that thieves there would have their sights set on expensive prizes. But the venerable family minivan is the biggest target, with more Dodge Caravans stolen than any other vehicle in the state.

Considering that the headquarters of the three biggest domestic auto brands are located in Michigan, it seems that car thieves have some misguided loyalty to their home-state heroes. No imports are on the top-10 list for stolen cars in Michigan — only vehicles from General Motors, Ford and Chrysler (FCA).

Given the harsh winters Minnesota experiences, you’d expect the most stolen vehicles to be primarily trucks or SUVs. However, the top two favorites of car thieves are Honda sedans — namely the perennially-favorite Accord and Civic.

The Ford F-150 may be at the top of a car thief’s shopping list in this Southern clime, but the favorites overall seem to be Chevrolets. The Silverado, Impala and Colorado are high on the most stolen list in The Magnolia State.

Missouri is known as “The Show Me State,” but car thieves may have altered that nickname slightly to “show me your truck.” Pickups make up four of the five most stolen vehicles in the great state of Missouri.

Montana is one of the largest states in the union, and the targets of its car thieves are some of the largest vehicles on the market: the Chevrolet Silverado and Ford F-150. But overall there aren’t many trucks stolen — fewer than 100 Silverados were taken in Big Sky Country during 2014.

Once again the Honda Accord is most popular among car thieves — this time in the Cornhusker State. Full-size pickup trucks from Ford and Chevrolet are also common targets, as is the late-1990s Honda Civic.

The odds may be against you if you own a mid-1990s Honda Accord in Nevada, since that’s the car most thieves put their chips on. Your odds don’t improve much with the late-1990s Honda Civic — it comes in a close second to the Accord on the NICB most stolen list.

New Hampshire

Based on the statistics, it would seem that car thieves are not terribly successful in New Hampshire. While the Honda Civic is the most stolen car in The Granite State, only 26 were stolen in 2014.

By a wide margin, car thieves in The Garden State pick Hondas over any other vehicles. More than 1,000 Accords were stolen in 2014; almost 800 Civics were detached from their owners.

New Mexico

New Mexico may be known as the Land of Enchantment, but not if you’ve had your Ford F-150 stolen from your driveway. This popular truck was the most popular among car thieves in 2014 — quite disenchanting, to say the least.

Car thieves in The Empire State most often purloin the omnipresent Hondas — Accord and Civic. More interesting is that the Ford Econoline cargo van is next on the list; perhaps an easy target as an idling delivery vehicle in The Big Apple.

The popularity of the 1996 Honda Accord continues in North Carolina, where it gets targeted by car thieves more often than any other vehicle. Not surprisingly, the best-selling Ford F-150 follows in a close second.

It’s all about trucks in North Dakota. Although relatively few vehicles are reported stolen in The Roughrider State — the Silverado leads with just 124 missing in 2014 — the top five on the list are all pickup trucks.

While most states see the Honda Accord or Chevrolet Silverado as their most stolen vehicle, in Ohio thieves are more interested in a family hauler. The Dodge Caravan is one of the most popular minivans on the market, for consumers as well as those who prefer to obtain their vehicles in less appropriate manners.

Car thieves in South Carolina have a thing for trucks, favoring the 10-year-old Ford F-150 slightly more than the late-1990s Chevrolet Silverado. The 1996 Honda Accord is sought after as well — as the third-most-likely vehicle to be taken without permission.

While the Ford F-150 is at the top of the car thieves shopping list in South Dakota, five of the six most stolen vehicles in this state are products of General Motors. This includes trucks from Chevrolet as well as the Pontiac Grand Prix.

Tennessee may be known as The Volunteer State, but we’re confident no Silverado owners willingly contributed trucks to those who took them. The 20-year-old Chevy pickup was the most sought-after vehicle in Tennessee, followed by a 10-year-old Ford F-150.

Texas
2006 Ford F-150
Texas is truck country, so it’s no big surprise that the Ford F-150 is closely followed by the Chevrolet Silverado and Dodge Ram pickups as most stolen in the state. This may have something to do with the large population of the Lone Star State: the three models made up almost 20,000 trucks stolen in 2014.

Utah joined the union in 1896, and two Hondas built 100 years later are by far the most popular vehicles among car thieves. The Accord was stolen just slightly fewer times than the Civic, followed by the Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado and Subaru Legacy.

If you want to keep your vehicle safe, Vermont may be the place for you. The most stolen vehicle in this northeastern state was the F-150, but only 10 were reported to the NICB as stolen during all of 2014.

Theft numbers aren’t very high in Virginia; however, there were still almost 250 Honda Accords stolen in 2014. The Ford F-150, Toyota Camry, Honda Civic and Chevrolet Silverado round the top five favorites of Old Dominion car thieves.

Car jackers were busy in the state of Washington last year — almost 5,000 Honda Accords were stolen. More than 1,000 Honda Civics and Subaru Legacys were also taken — some of the highest auto theft stats in the nation.

Wyoming is clearly truck country — the five most stolen vehicles in The Cowboy State are all pickup trucks from Ford, General Motors and Dodge (FCA). But it seems people respect each other’s property in Wyoming — even the most stolen F-150 only had 41 vehicles reported to the NICB last year.
