Auto shows used to be flush with wild concept cars, but those days have almost disappeared. I say almost because Genesis continues to bring out beautiful concept vehicles, as the company did at this year’s New York show with the X Gran Equator Concept.

The boldly styled SUV features a long hood and sleek cabin with dark wheel cladding and 24-inch all-terrain tires. It has unusual proportions for a sport-ute, but it looks good. “The X Gran Equator Concept is an exercise in harmonizing contrasts—combining elegance with ruggedness, and the spirit of exploration with refined comfort,” said Luc Donckerwolke, Chief Creative Officer of Genesis.

The dual-line headlamp motif that has become a signature of Genesis vehicles is taken to an extreme on this concept, with front lights wrapping around to the doors, with dual red taillights doing the same at the rear. Quad fog lights in two round spaces help light the way forward, adding another bold design element.

Inside is an interesting mix of analog and digital, with classic round gauges replacing the typical infotainment display screen. A large center console splits the front seats, providing plenty of storage options, and the front seats swivel for added versatility.

The mix of colors and materials throughout the cabin adds a touch of elegance to the rugged off-roader.

While Genesis hasn’t announced any plans to build a vehicle based on the X Gran Equator Concept, the brand does have a history of bringing concept vehicles to production, so we’ll wait and see.
