Fuel Efficiency, American Style

The Chevrolet Volt employs an innovative drivetrain, which is basically an electric motor with an onboard gasoline-powered generator. Volt can travel 38 miles on a full charge, but unlike a pure electric car the driver has a choice — plug it in or just keep driving. When needed, the gasoline engine starts up and charges the batteries to power the electric motor. So if your commute is less than 38 miles and you can charge the Volt at work, you may never need to use the gasoline engine — but it’s nice to know you have a total range of 380 miles. One note —a new 2016 Volt will go on sale later this year with a 50-mile EV range, as well as other improvements.

  1. You think 550-mile range would be bladder-busting? How about 60 miles for this old lady?
Those were a nice range of vehicles, price-wise and size-wise. The smallest were the neatest looking.
