Toyota’s second-generation fuel-cell electric vehicle was redesigned for 2021 as a flagship sedan. A major change from the first-generation front-wheel-drive Mirai, the new model is built on the rear-wheel drive GA-L platform also used for the larger Lexus LS sedan. The next-generation fuel-cell stack that produces electricity from hydrogen is 20 percent smaller and 50 percent lighter than the fuel-cell stack in the previous Mirai model. Compressed hydrogen is stored in three carbon-fiber reinforced high-pressure tanks, and electricity is stored in a lithium-ion battery. Power output is 182 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque.
