Best-Selling Auto Brands
The U.S. auto industry hoped for continued recovery following sales increases in 2021; however, due to ongoing supply issues that trend did not continue. With less than 14 million new vehicles sold last year, the industry experienced its lowest numbers in over a decade. That said, some brands did have positive sales in 2022, with high-end marques such as Bentley and Rolls-Royce reporting record numbers. Others, such as Honda and Nissan, experienced considerable sales dips. Here’s how 2022 stacked up for each automotive brand sold in America, including the best-selling model of each maker. A few outliers have not reported 2022 sales data yet, and most figures listed are for the U.S.; however, some companies only report global sales so we also note that where appropriate.

Best-Selling Model: Chiron
One of the most exclusive automotive brands in the world, Bugatti doesn’t sell a lot of vehicles. Since every car gets hand built to customer specifications, the company reached its maximum output of 80 vehicles delivered last year. During 2022 the company delivered the 400th Chiron, the final nine Chiron Super Sport 300+, and all ten copies of the Centodieci. Looking forward, only 100 examples of the Chiron are left to build to complete the series, and production will start on the W16 Mistral. The Mistral roadster debuted during Monterey Car Week, and all examples of its limited production run of 99 vehicles have been reserved.

Best-Selling Model: 500X
Fiat is down to a single model sold in America. With sales dropping considerably over the last two years, the future is not looking promising for the Italian brand in America. The 500X is an all-wheel-drive crossover riding on the same platform as the Jeep Renegade. Fiat hasn’t given up, though — the automaker has announced that the 500e will return to North America in early 2024.

Lamborghini
Total Sales: 2,721
Vs. 2021: +10.1%
Best-Selling Model: Urus
There has been a clear, positive sales trend among high-end car companies, and Lamborghini is no exception. Not only did this Italian automaker have record sales in America last year, Lamborghini also sold 9,233 vehicles worldwide — the most in the company’s history. The Urus super SUV continues to hold its position as the brand’s best-seller, and most buyers are new to the Lamborghini brand. Last year Lamborghini introduced the highest-performing Urus yet, the Urus Performante. Boasting extreme styling and a powerful twin-turbo V8 engine generating 657 horsepower, the Performante sprints to 62 mph in a mere 3.3 seconds on its way to a top speed of 190 mph.

Best-Selling Model: Bentayga
In 2021 Bentley reported record sales in the Americas region — the brand’s best-selling market worldwide — and then repeated the feat for 2022. In addition to this critical region’s success, globally the company sold 15,174 vehicles — a 4 percent increase over 2021, which was also a record year. The Bentayga, Bentley’s luxurious and powerful SUV, continues to be the marque’s top seller accounting for 42 percent of worldwide sales. This success should continue with increased demand for the hybrid variant and the introduction of an extended-wheelbase Bentayga. Also experiencing success is the Flying Spur, with a new plug-in hybrid version grabbing 30 percent of the big sedan’s sales.

Rolls-Royce
Total Sales: 6,021 (Global)
Vs. 2021: + 7.8%
Best-Selling Model: Cullinan
The previous 12 months have been good for Rolls-Royce — the legendary marque sold more vehicles in 2022 than ever before in its 118-year history. This figure is even more impressive after a record year in 2021. Personalization remains important to Rolls-Royce customers, with bespoke commissions also at record levels. This trend should continue as demand remains high: order banks are already filling for 2023, and preorders for the all-electric Spectre are higher than expected. The Cullinan SUV remains the company’s best-selling model worldwide; however, the new Ghost also experienced impressive growth, especially since the introduction of the higher-performance Ghost Black Badge. The Black Badge offerings are especially popular in North America, where 35 percent of vehicle commissions in 2022 were Black Badge variants.

Alfa Romeo
Total Sales: 12,845

Best-Selling Model: Stelvio
In 2016 Alfa Romeo returned to the U.S. after an almost 40-year hiatus with the high-performance Giulia sedan, later joined by the Stelvio SUV. Sales peaked at around 24,000 units in 2018; over the last few years, demand for these Italian models has diminished. When Stelvio arrived for the 2018 model year, it quickly became the brand’s best-seller and has remained so ever since. With standard full-time all-wheel drive, Stelvio is available with two powerful engines including a 2.9-liter V6 producing 505 horsepower in the top-level Quadrifoglio. Alfa is hoping to turn its sales around with multiple new models on the horizon, the first of which will be the Tonale plug-in hybrid crossover expected to arrive later this year.

MINI
Total Sales: 29,504
Vs. 2021: -1.4%
Best-Selling Model: Cooper
MINI sales in the U.S. have been on a steady decline since 2015, although in 2022 the brand stayed even with its 2021 performance. This can be attributed to a solid fourth quarter with a 31 percent increase versus a year earlier. Like its distant cousin, Rolls-Royce (MINI and Rolls-Royce are part of the BMW Group), MINI anticipates offering only electric vehicles by the 2030s. For 2022 MINI introduced a refreshed lineup that retains the car’s engaging face, updated taillights, a revised interior and multiple special editions.

Infiniti
Total Sales: 46,619
Vs. 2021: -20.4%
Best-Selling Model: QX60
As the luxury arm of Nissan, Infiniti had been experiencing steady growth in the U.S. until 2017. Since then sales have been trending downward, and 2022 recorded the lowest numbers since the brand launched. However, hope remains for Infiniti — the brand introduced several new and refreshed vehicles last year, including an updated full-size QX80, the all-new sporty-looking QX55, and a redesigned QX60 3-row premium SUV which has become the brand’s best-seller. Clearly, SUVs are the future of the Infiniti brand since they outsell passenger car offerings by a 6-to-1 margin.

Polestar
Total Sales: 51,500 (Global)
Vs. 2021: +77.6%
Best-Selling Model: Polestar 2
Polestar is a standalone electric performance brand from Volvo and one of the newest brands in America. The Polestar brand launched in 2018 with the limited-edition high-performance hybrid Polestar 1. For 2021 the more mainstream Polestar 2 electric sports sedan came to market, which helped establish the fledgling company. The new brand had rapid growth over the last year, which should continue when the all-new Polestar 3 crossover arrives later this year. With a Polestar 4 and Polestar 5 already announced for the next few years, the brand’s future looks bright. The company expects to increase annual global sales to 290,000 units by 2025.

Six years ago, Genesis launched as the luxury vehicle division of Hyundai, and the brand has experienced great success since then. After a significant sales increase in 2021, Genesis achieved its best annual sales ever in 2022. This upward trend should continue as the brand continues to broaden its lineup. In addition to the popular GV70 crossover and G80 sedan, Genesis now offers the all-electric GV60 as well as electric versions of the GV70 and G80.

Best-Selling Model: Macan
This German sports car maker continues to have great success with its current lineup — achieving record annual sales in 2022 by eclipsing its own sales bar set a year earlier. The Macan SUV continues as the brand’s best-seller coming in slightly ahead of the larger Cayenne, and the iconic 911 sold more than 10,000 vehicles for the second year in a row. And last year, 10 percent of Porsches sold in America were electric vehicles. Porsche continues to expand its product line, coming to market with special versions such as the off-road-ready 911 Dakar or Style Editions of the 718 Cayman and Boxster.

Best-Selling Model: Corsair
Since the sunset of the MKZ and Continental passenger cars, Lincoln now only offers SUVs in its lineup. And even though overall sales were down last year, the midsize Aviator and entry-level Corsair both had positive gains in 2022 versus the previous year. A 5-passenger midsize crossover, the Nautilus takes its place between the smaller Corsair and 3-row Aviator. For the 2023 model year, Corsair received a full refresh with a new front-end design and a revised interior with a larger center display. “Corsair plays an important role in our portfolio — artistically crafted and expertly designed to attract
younger Lincoln clients and give them the luxury experience they desire,” said Lincoln North America Director Michael Sprague.

Sales are down for the Swedish brand; perhaps more telling about the future of Volvo is the popularity of its Recharge (EV and PHEV) models that accounted for almost one-third of Volvo’s U.S. vehicle sales in 2022. The XC60 crossover remained the brand’s most popular model, and for 2022 the model received styling tweaks and new powertrains. Inside, a new 12.3-inch digital driver display gets paired with a large 9-inch vertical display at the center of the dash. The XC60 also features a new Android operating system.

Best-Selling Model: MDX
On the strength of its SUV lineup, Acura had its highest annual sales in three years during 2021, but that success was short-lived as sales declined in 2022. Figures were down substantially for almost every model in the Acura lineup, although a bright spot has been the new Integra. Bringing back this well-known nameplate on a fun-to-drive 4-door hatchback has proved to be successful for the brand. The Integra received accolades as the 2023 North American Car of the Year, which should further improve its popularity.

With a sales increase of more than 10 percent last year compared to 2020, Buick was the only General Motors division reporting positive sales growth in 2021 versus the previous year. However, that success was short-lived — Buick had significant sales declines across its lineup in 2022. The Encore GX declined more than 50 percent versus a year earlier, but it still remains the best-selling model in the Buick lineup. The Encore GX features premium styling inside and out, as well as a more spacious cabin and improved cargo-carrying capacity compared to the standard Encore. In addition to its long list of standard equipment — which includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto — the Encore GX gets the latest advanced safety and driver-assist technologies.

At one point Chrysler seemed like a write-off, but this iconic brand reported a nice uptick in overall sales for 2021 and stayed close to that figure for 2022. Pacifica — the brand’s latest minivan offering — was refreshed for the 2021 model year and continues to hold its place as Chrysler’s best-selling model. Looking to the future, Chrysler has already revealed the futuristic Airflow electric car and also announced it will become an all-electric vehicle brand by 2028, with the first battery-electric vehicle planned for 2025.

The updated model of this commanding SUV had a stellar year, matching its sales success of 2021. Since its introduction 20 years ago, Escalade has been among the best-selling luxury SUVs in America. Audi also had success with its electrified e-tron family of vehicles, with sales of battery-electric vehicles up by almost 50 percent. Outselling every other Audi by a large margin, the Q5 received an updated look for the 2021 model year featuring a slimmer, broader octagonal Singleframe grille with taller side air intakes that have sporty trapezoidal inserts. Audi also offers the Q5 SUV as a plug-in hybrid, further contributing to this small crossover’s success.

The Dodge lineup is down to three vehicles — Charger, Challenger, and Durango — and the two muscle cars had year-over-year sales increases. However, overall sales are down for the brand since these three couldn’t make up for the losses of Grand Caravan and Journey, which are now discontinued. Charger remains the most popular Dodge model. In keeping with tradition, Charger has powerful engine choices including the R/T Scat Pack with a 485-horsepower 6.4-liter HEMI V8 powerplant or the latest entry: the SRT Hellcat Redeye with a supercharged 6.2-liter HEMI V8 producing a mind-blowing 797 horsepower. Best-Selling Model: Sierra
Sales of GMC products rebounded in 2022, driven primarily by positive sales of the updated Terrain SUV as well as the Sierra HD and Canyon pickup trucks. Once again the full Sierra pickup truck line leads the GMC lineup, accounting for about half of the brand’s annual sales. Similar to its Chevrolet Silverado sibling, the Sierra boasts a range of comfort, convenience and safety features. One standout is the truck’s MultiPro Tailgate, which offers six positions for easier loading; it also functions as a standing workstation. Last year GMC added the Sierra Denali Ultimate — the company’s most luxurious Sierra. While the ProMaster City had record sales last year, the Ram pickup sells more than any other vehicle in the entire portfolio of parent company Stellantis. This full-size truck features bold exterior styling and the interior is among the nicest on the market. Multiple powertrains are available, including a diesel and a HEMI V8 with a mild hybrid system. When properly equipped, the Ram 1500 can tow up to 12,750 pounds or haul 2,300 pounds — impressive figures for a half-ton pickup. After three years of declining sales, Nissan heralded a healthy sales increase for 2021, but that momentum did not last — the brand’s numbers dropped again in 2022. But as the Japan-based automaker refreshes and updates its long-running models, it expects sales to make a comeback. This holds true for 2022; Pathfinder, Altima and Frontier received updates, and all three had substantial sales increases in 2022 versus 2021. The Rogue compact crossover had a sales decline last year, but it remains the best-selling model in the lineup. Almost one-fourth of all Wranglers sold are the 4xe and, according to Jeep, the Wrangler 4xe is the best-selling plug-in hybrid in America. The Grand Cherokee had a slight decline in overall sales but it remains the most popular model Jeep sells in America. Jeep introduced an all-new Grand Cherokee last year. The biggest surprise was a dramatic sales increase for Malibu, the only non-electrified sedan remaining in Chevy’s lineup. The Silverado full-size pickup truck dropped slightly in year-over-year sales but retained its best-selling position for the brand, representing more than one-third of Chevrolet’s annual sales. Last year Chevrolet introduced an updated Silverado with fresh exterior styling and a revised interior with enhanced technology. Toyota boasts four of the top 10 selling new vehicles in America, with the RAV4 besting all crossovers and the Camry earning the passenger car crown for the 21st year in a row. The popular brand also continued its dominance among electrified vehicles, which make up almost a quarter of Toyota’s total annual sales. Toyota will likely continue its success into 2023 with a new Prius and larger Grand Highlander arriving this year.
