A manufacturer out of Hood River, Oregon, BCW makes fully custom campers for short-, long- or flatbed trucks. The BWC website says they charge for time and materials as well as a builder’s fee, with most camper quotations coming in around $350,000. Obviously, this is no cookie-cutter camper. Bahn also sells the seamless, yachtlike truck camper shells alone at a cost of about $35,000 with an 8-week delivery time. The shop will also do as much or as little to the shells as clients request: window and door installs, plumbing, wiring, etc.

Inventor and entrepreneur Mark King drew inspiration for the Kimbo from the interior of the USS Alabama, a nuclear submarine that his father led as captain. The exterior inspiration came from none other than a 19-foot stainless steel Airstream trailer, which was King’s residence for a time.

The 820 Cirrus has an open, modern vibe with light-stained solid wood cabinets, a spacious dinette, a queen-size bed and lots of storage space in overhead cabinets. The camper also includes a Nautilus water management system, a wet bath with a fold-down sink and shower as well as a MaxxAir fan, air-conditioning, Alde heat and hot water, a deep kitchen sink, a microwave, and a counter-height refrigerator. The 820 has so much standard equipment that the only options are a rear awning and a Lagun table.

The 2022 Camp-X is another amazing truck camper with a pop-up roof so it has a lower center of gravity and profile during travel. Proprietary aluminum composite panel construction keeps the camper warmer in winter and cooler in summer. The CAMP-X exterior includes manual Reico Titan jacks, exterior shower room and awning brackets, roof-rack-ready L tracks, LED lighting, an RV entrance door with grab handle, and four Torklift tie-downs.

A division of Forest River, the Palomino brand is marketed toward outdoor adventurers. The units are made in Colon, Michigan, and have wedge-style roofs for overlanding ease without sacrificing room in camp. The EB-1 has an electric roof lift system, manual Rieco Titan jacks (pre-wired for electric jacks), a 20,000 BTU furnace and a large Dome Skylight up front for nighttime star gazing. A Badlands package includes a Thule roof rack, a 110-watt solar panel and a second battery tray.

Each Phoenix camper is a custom unit built to size for a customer’s particular vehicle, from a Toyota Tacoma pickup to a Unimog overland monster. The truck campers feature woodless construction and are raised and lowered by four hydraulic electric jacks at each corner. Built in Commerce City, Colorado, Phoenix Campers have double-welded aluminum frames and fiberglass siding. Phoenix truck campers are not sold at dealerships; they are factory direct to the consumer. Production time at post time of this article is 14 months, according to the Phoenix website.

The philosophy behind them is simple: build the best minimalist, lightweight, off-grid truck camper out there. Scout offers three models: the Yoho, Olympic and Kenai — the largest model. The Kenai is constructed with aluminum exoskeleton framing and a gelcoat fiberglass exterior. Exterior features are too extensive to list individually, so let’s simply say the Kenai even has a solar porch light.

The beautiful Kenai interior delivers with its incredibly minimalist vibe. Although the website says the Kenai can sleep up to six, Kenai would sleep four most comfortably via a queen-size mattress in the cabover and two in the converted dinette. Scout also offers a rooftop tent for the Kenai (there’s your six sleepers).
