What is it?
It’s sad but true – the V8-powered Dodge Charger is no longer. But this legendary muscle car isn’t going away – instead, it is changing with the times, and later this summer, an all-new Charger will arrive. However, instead of the HEMI V8, this new 2024 Dodge Charger will have a fully electric powertrain, promising the same or higher performance levels for this thoroughly modern muscle car. For those customers who are not quite ready to make the leap to an EV, there will be a powerful internal combustion engine (ICE) version coming as well.
Two or Four Door
When the Charger returned in 2006 after a 20-year sabbatical, it was a large four-door sedan, much to the dismay of Charger enthusiasts. Now the two-door is back for those who want it – the 2024 Charger will be available as a two-door or four-door.
Electric Power
The all-new 2024 Dodge Charger Daytona will initially be offered as a 2-door R/T or Scat Pack. Both feature a dual-motor electric powertrain for full-time all-wheel drive. The R/T will get 456 horsepower and 404 lb-ft of torque, while the Scat Pack boasts 590 horsepower with a plentiful 627 lb-ft of torque.
Upgrade Kits
But there’s more to the performance story. Dodge will offer Stage 1 and Stage 2 power upgrade kits, adding 40 and 80 horsepower, respectively. For launch, the R/T will come standard with Stage 1 for 496 horsepower, while the Scat Pack gets a Stage 2 upgrade for a total output of 670 horsepower. Expect the R/T to reach 60 mph in 4.7 seconds, with the Scat Pack doing the same in 3.3 seconds.
Tires and Brakes
With plenty of power on tap, the new Charger needs strong brakes to match. Available with the Track Package are the largest brakes ever offered on a Charger – 16-inch Brembo vented rotors with six piston calipers up front, four piston at the rear. Also available with the Track Package are 20-inch wheels fitted with staggered Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar 3 305/35ZR20XL front/325/35ZR20 rear tires.
Fratzonic Exhaust
Part of the charm of a muscle car is its throaty exhaust note; however, EVs have no exhaust and are among the quietest cars on the road. So what happens when the muscle car is an EV? Dodge has a solution with the Fratzonic Chambered Exhaust system. With speakers broadcasting sound through a series of chambers and exiting through two passive radiators, the system can deliver a unique sound that, according to Dodge, will rival the sound intensity of the Charger Hellcat. The sound will change with the throttle and speed, but engineers are still making final adjustments, so we still haven’t experienced this new muscle car sound.
Range and Charging
While the EPA hasn’t tested the new Charger Daytona, Dodge estimates the R/T will have a range of 317 miles, while the more powerful Scat Pack will get a respectable 260 miles of range. Both trim levels have the same 100.5 kWh battery pack, so charging time is the same. From 20-80 percent will take less than six hours on a Level 2 charger, while a DC fast charger takes just under 30 minutes to do the same.
Hurricane Power
The HEMI V8 may be dead, but Dodge will still offer the 2024 Charger with a gas engine. Billed as the Dodge Charger SIXPACK, the gas-powered Charger will be available with two new Hurricane turbocharged inline 6-cylinder engine variants. The SIXPACK S.O. (standard output) gets 420 horsepower, while the SIXPACK H.O. (high output) bumps up to 550 horsepower. Like the electric Charger Daytona, the Charger SIXPACK will also come standard with all-wheel drive.
New Look
The new Charger has a more streamlined look than the outgoing model, but its wide rectangular front design, bold fender flares, and low stance still carry a powerful look with a clear influence from the 1960s Charger. Slim LED headlights and an LED light bar frame an open space that allows air to flow over the hood via the unique R Wing –a front spoiler that improves front downforce. In the center is the illuminated Fratzog logo, originally used in the 1960s and now adorning all next-generation Dodge vehicles.
Rear View
The view from behind the Charger reveals a distinctive look, mimicking the rectangular shape of the front. The Fratzog logo is illuminated in red, surrounded by LED “Ring of Fire” taillights. Daytona is embossed on the lower diffuser, with the Fratzonic exhaust system below.
Same Silhouette
The Dodge Charger is now available as a two- or four-door; however, the two iterations have the same dimensions with the same sleek silhouette. Even the rear seat and cargo space are identical – the only difference is the additional doors with easier access to the rear seat.
High-Tech Cabin
The Charger’s cabin is all new for the 2024 model year, delivering a high-tech look. The 12.3-inch touchscreen display at the center is standard on all Chargers, showcasing Uconnect 5, the brand’s innovative infotainment system. Complimenting the big center screen is a digital driver’s display – 10.25 inches in the R/T, 16 inches in the Scat Pack. The 64-color ambient lighting that surrounds the cabin adds to the vibe.
Performance Wheel
A new performance steering wheel is standard on the Charger, featuring a unique flat top/bottom design. The paddle shifters on the steering column have no gears to shift – instead, they regulate the level of brake regeneration. Also on the steering wheel is the Power Shot button. Like the turbo button in a video game, the Power Shot button delivers a 15-second burst of 40 additional horsepower. This button may be a bit gimmicky – that added 40 hp just brings the Charger to max power – but we still like it.
Stylish Seats
Front seats have a performance look, trimmed in standard cloth and vinyl, or with the available heated seats in Black or Demonic Red Nappa leather. High-backed bucket seats with a stylish pass-through are also available.
Rear Seats
With either the two-door or four-door, the rear seat offers good legroom and headroom, although it is slightly less than the outgoing Charger.
Hatchback Versatility
Both the two- and four-door Charger have a hatchback design which adds considerable utility to this new version. The hatch opens wide for easy loading, and there’s 22.8 cubic feet of cargo area behind the rear seats. Folding the rear seats increases the space to 37.4 cubic feet – as Dodge pointed out, that’s enough room to bring an extra set of tires to track day.
Next-Generation Muscle
“The electrified 2024 Dodge Charger Daytona Scat Pack delivers Charger Hellcat Redeye levels of performance and announces its presence through the world’s first Fratzonic Chambered Exhaust, while Hurricane engine-powered Dodge Charger SIXPACK models will give the Brotherhood of Muscle a gas option that produces better horsepower and torque numbers than the outgoing 5.7 and 6.4-liter HEMI engines,” said Tim Kuniskis, Dodge brand chief executive officer – Stellantis. “The next generation of Dodge muscle has arrived.”
Arriving Soon
Later this summer, the first 2024 Dodge Charger Daytona will arrive as a 2-door R/T or Scat Pack. The four-door Charger Daytona and 2- and 4-door Charger SIXPACK are expected in Q1 of 2025. A more powerful Charger Daytona Banshee, rumored to have at least 800 horsepower, is expected sometime later in 2025. Pricing will be released closer to the on-sale date.
