2023 Toyota Crown
The world’s largest automaker recently unveiled the all-new 2023 Toyota Crown, a flagship model that offers a new take on vehicle styling. The new model combines the roomy comfort of a full-size sedan with the higher profile and elevated ride height of an SUV or crossover. The 2023 Toyota Crown will be offered exclusively as a gas-electric hybrid with a choice of two hybrid systems: the new performance-oriented HYBRID MAX or the fourth-generation Toyota Hybrid System providing maximum fuel efficiency.

New Crown Design
The bold, innovative design of the 2023 Toyota Crown takes the traditional shape of a full-size sedan with the additional height of a crossover sporting large diameter wheels, making it easier to access the cabin at its higher position. Overall height for the Crown is 60.6 inches compared to 56.9 inches for a Camry sedan and 65.9 inches for a Venza crossover.

Model Lineup
The 2023 Toyota Crown will be offered in three trim levels: XLE, Limited and Platinum. The XLE and Limited are powered by THS, and the Platinum has the new HYBRID MAX system. Both feature Toyota’s electronic on-demand all-wheel drive that includes a separate rear-mounted electric motor delivering power to the rear wheels as needed. Crown XLE standard equipment includes 19-inch alloy wheels, heated Softex and fabric front seats, and an all-new Toyota multimedia system with a 12.3-inch touchscreen and six speakers. The Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 suite of safety features is also standard.

Crown Limited
In addition to the standard equipment on the XLE, the Crown Limited adds multibeam LED headlights, a fixed panoramic roof, leather-trimmed seats, heated/ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, an 11-speaker JBL audio system, rain sensing wipers and intelligent clearance sonar with rear cross-traffic braking. The available Advanced Technology Package includes 21-inch 10-spoke alloy wheels, a birds-eye-view camera and a digital key system.

Crown Platinum
The top-of-the-line Toyota Crown Platinum adds the HYBRID MAX powertrain, adaptive variable suspension, advanced park, and unique 21-inch machined 10-spoke alloy wheels with black accents. An available two-tone color scheme includes black paint that extends from the hood to the trunk over a primary color of Oxygen White, Heavy Metal, Supersonic Red or Bronze Age.

Hybrid Power
The 2023 Toyota Crown is offered with one of two hybrid systems — the fourth-gen THS that powers Crown XLE and Limited, or the performance-oriented HYBRID MAX system that powers the Crown Platinum. The THS combines a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine with two electric motors in a compact package; Toyota estimates that the Crown with THS will achieve 38 mpg.

HYBRID MAX
The high-performance HYBRID MAX combines a turbocharged 2.4-liter engine tuned for peak torque at 2000 to 3000 rpm, combined with a 6-speed direct-shift automatic transmission, a front electric motor and a rear eAxle with a high-output, water-cooled electric motor for combined output of 340 horsepower. Toyota estimates the Crown Platinum with HYBRID MAX will achieve 28 mpg.

Drive Modes
The 2023 Toyota Crown XLE and Limited offer three selectable drive modes: Normal, Eco and Sport. Sport mode sharpens throttle response, Eco mode helps the driver with fuel economy, and Normal will handle most everyday driving situations. (An EV mode allows electric-only driving at low speeds for short distances.) The Crown Platinum adds Sport +, Comfort and Custom modes as well as adaptive variable suspension. Sport + mode puts the emphasis on steering response, flat cornering and stability, while Comfort is tuned for a smooth ride and occupant comfort. Custom mode allows the driver to adjust system setting individually to create a personal profile.

Interior Comfort
Toyota designers created a Crown interior all about comfort, with standard power seats and dual-zone climate control. All trim levels feature a 12.3-inch multi-information display, and the driver can choose between different displays including a hybrid system indicator that shows system output and regeneration status to encourage eco-driving habits. The 2023 Toyota Crown also has the automaker’s new audio multimedia system with a 12.3-inch touchscreen, improved user experience, and a wide range of enhanced connectivity and convenience features.

Crown History
The Crown first debuted in Japan in 1955 as the Toyopet Crown — the first mass-produced passenger vehicle from the automaker. Since then, the Crown rose to prominence as Toyota’s premium sedan. Crown was the first Toyota model sold in America starting in 1958, although it’s been 50 years since it was last offered in the U.S. — in 1972. Over the 15 generations of Crown vehicles sold in Japan, the model has always showcased innovative technology, and the 2023 Toyota Crown provides a different take on the traditional sedan thanks to the new design featuring an elevated ride height.

Smooth and Quiet
Built on a version of Toyota’s New Global Architecture K also used for other sedan and crossover models, the Crown’s chief aims are a comfortable, quiet ride. Contributors to these ends are a high-strength platform and suspension components designed to achieve a smooth, tranquil driving experience. Acoustic glass, sound absorption and sealing materials all add to the serene interior. The electronically controlled brake system features active cornering assist, which engages the stability control system to reduce understeer in certain situations.
