2022 New York Auto Show
After three years of cancellations due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the New York Auto Show came back to life this week to provide a much needed feeling of normalcy in the automotive industry. A wide range of new models made first appearances here in New York, including the larger and more powerful Grand Wagoneer L, the exotic Lamborghini Huracan Tecnica and the updated 2023 Kia Telluride. Ultimately more than a dozen new models had world premieres at the sprawling Jacob Javits Center. Let’s take a quick look at highlights of the 2022 New York Auto Show.

2023 Alfa-Romeo Tonale
This time-honored brand provided a glimpse into its future with the introduction of the all-new Tonale. The Italian automaker describes the 2023 Alfa Romeo Tonale as the first step of a metamorphosis for the brand into a new period of electrification and connectivity. The flagship of the new model line is the plug-in hybrid electric version, which has an electric range of more than 30 miles and a total combined power output of 272 horsepower. Three Tonale trim levels will be offered: Sprint, Ti and Veloce, and all versions will have all-wheel drive, whether powered by the hybrid drivetrain or a 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine.

2023 Alfa-Romeo Tonale
Alfa Romeo’s newest model closely follows the design of the 2019 Tonale Concept created by the design studio at Centro Stile Alfa Romeo. A strong shoulder line, dubbed GT Line, flows from the headlights to the rear of the Tonale; a signature Alfa Romeo shield-shaped grille dominates the front of the crossover. The interior has a driver-focused layout with a telescopic instrument panel and a sporty, compact steering wheel. The instrument cluster is a 12.3-inch digital display; a 10.25-inch center display features Uconnect5, the latest infotainment system from Stellantis. Designed to be sporty and high tech, the Tonale is trimmed in aluminum, leather and Alcantara suede. Look for the 2023 Tonale to arrive in showrooms early next year.

2023 BMW X7
The X7 is the flagship SUV of the BMW lineup, and for 2023 this large Sports Activity Vehicle (BMW’s moniker) gets powertrain updates, new interior features and — as if it didn’t already stand out — bolder styling. The prominent BMW kidney grille has been revised with new grille bars; the grille can now be illuminated for further emphasis. The more powerful X7 M60i has a more aggressive look with larger air intakes and an integrated M logo. A new headlight design splits the running lights and driving lights; the slim LED DRLs sit above headlights ensconced behind smoked glass making them unnoticeable until switched on. Taillights are also updated with a three-dimensional sculpting effect. Available 23-inch light alloy wheels add to the bold styling.

2023 BMW X7
Running the latest version of BMW iDrive, the X7 gets a new curved display that BMW introduced in the iX. Heated comfort seats are now standard on the X7, with the option of adding active seat ventilation and massage functions. The new X7 features an innovative vegan surface material called Sensafin that looks and feels like leather. Two engines are available for the 2023 BMW X7: the xDrive 4.0i gets a new 3.0-liter TwinPower Turbo 6-cylinder unit producing 375 horsepower (40 hp more than the current version) while the M60i boasts a TwinPower Turbo V8 producing 523 horsepower. Pricing starts at $77,850 for the X7 xDrive 40i; the X7 M60i comes in at $103,100. Look for the 2023 BMW X7 to arrive in showrooms this fall. A more powerful ALPINA XB7 will join the lineup early next year.

Chrysler Airflow Graphite Concept
Counter to rumors of its demise, the Chrysler brand is not only alive but it has a promising — and electrifying — future. Embarking on a new journey under the Stellantis umbrella (result of the merger of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and French PSA Group), the time-honored American brand debuted the Airflow Graphite Concept at the 2022 New York Auto Show. This concept debut provides a hint of things to come from Chrysler. The brand plans to become all electric by 2028, with the first battery-electric vehicle planned for 2025. A variation of the Airflow Concept that debuted earlier this year at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the Airflow Graphite Concept is painted in Galaxy Black with Cyrus Copper accents.

Chrysler Airflow Graphite Concept
The Airflow features a sleek design with a low ride height and wide track. Up front, extremely slim headlights flank a wide grille. The Chrysler Wing logo gets illuminated with crystal LED lighting. This advanced concept has a streamlined profile enhanced by a long wheelbase and large 22-inch wheels. Bold rear fenders give the Airflow Concept a strong stance, further enhanced by an LED light bar that stretches across the full width of the car. The name AIRFLOW gets spelled out in large letters that light up in darkness. A spoiler mounted high on the rear hatch completes the streamlined look. Power comes from dual 200-horsepower motors — one at each axle — that provide an anticipated range of up to 400 miles.

Cobera C300
It may look like a classic Shelby Cobra, sound like a Cobra, and is certainly as quick (if not quicker) than the original Cobra, but under the skin this sports car is a thoroughly modern electric machine. Built by Cobera Motors out of Hungary, the C300 is clearly inspired by the original Shelby AC Cobra. The C300 features an elegant interior with stylish leather sport seats and classic analog gauges; however, buyers can opt for a more futuristic look with fully customizable displays.

Cobera C300
Cobera offers multiple powertrain variations, but the ultimate C300 gets a dual-motor setup delivering 600 horsepower and an astonishing 4144 lb-ft of torque. This much power combined with the C300’s lightweight design gets this faux Cobra to 62 mph in 2.7 seconds. Adding to the experience is a simulated sequential 5-speed gearbox. Designed and assembled in the U.S., the Cobera C300 is the first in a planned series of electrified classic cars.

DEUS Vayanne
One of the more exciting new models on display at the 2022 New York Auto Show comes from Austria-based DEUS Automobiles. The all-new Vayanne is a full-electric hypercar that will be built with design and technical support from two major players in the automotive world: Italdesign and Williams Advanced Engineering. Both these companies have considerable experience in their respective fields, which lends considerable credibility to this project’s lofty goals.

DEUS Vayanne
The all-electric Vayanne is expected to deliver monstrous power; DEUS predicts the final production vehicle will generate 2200 horsepower with 1475 lb-ft of torque. This level of power should be able to rocket to 62 mph in less than 2 seconds with a top speed in excess of 248 mph. With 4.7-inches of ground clearance and a luxurious, comfortable cockpit, the Vayanne has a design encompassing both performance and practicality. DEUS plans to build 99 Vayannes, with the first deliveries expected in 2025.

2022 Ford GT Holman Moody Heritage
In 1964 Ford unveiled the original GT40 prototype at the New York Auto Show, so it’s fitting that the latest model in the Ford GT line gets a similar debut, making its first public appearance here at the 2022 New York Auto Show. The Ford GT Holman Moody is the final 2022 Heritage Edition, commemorating the GT40 MKII race cars that achieved a 1-2-3 finish at the 1966 24 Hours of LeMans. “Of all the Ford GT Heritage Edition liveries we’ve done, the Holman Moody Heritage Edition’s can’t-miss signature gold and red theme is an epic tribute to our 1966 Le Mans finish,” said Mike Severson, Ford GT program manager. “Inspired by one of the most well-known Ford GT40 race cars, this latest Ford GT honors the Holman Moody race team’s knowhow and ability to out-innovate global competitors,” Severson noted.

2022 Ford GT Holman Moody Heritage
This extremely limited GT Holman Moody stands out with a unique red and gold livery and the number 5 stamped on the door, hood and rear wing — just like the original. Showcasing this car’s exotic nature is prominent use of gloss carbon fiber, as seen on the front splitter, side sills, mirrors, engine louvers and the 20-inch wheels. Carbon fiber trim can be found throughout the cabin, and the Alcantara-wrapped carbon fiber seats feature gold accent stitching with a debossed GT logo on the head restraint. The Ford GT Homan Moody Heritage Edition is available for approved Ford GT customers with first deliveries taking place this spring.

2023 Hyundai Palisade
At the 2022 New York Auto Show, Hyundai took the wraps off the 2023 Palisade sporting fresh styling and a range of new features. The most noticeable change on the Korean brand’s flagship SUV is a wider cascading grille that is squared off compared to the current iteration. The grille gets flanked by vertical LED daytime running lights that give the updated Palisade a new signature look. The LED taillights have a cleaner design that adds a premium vibe to the SUV with new 20-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels completing the look. In addition to the updated appearance, these changes also have a positive aerodynamic effect on the overall design.

2023 Hyundai Palisade
Inside, the Palisade has improved comfort front to back, with a new available Ergo driver’s seat designed to increase comfort while reducing fatigue, as well as heated seats for third-row passengers — a first for Hyundai. The second row now has available seat ventilation. The redesigned instrument panel’s slim, horizontal air vents contribute to the Palisade’s spacious interior feeling. Other improvements include a 15-watt wireless charger and the latest version of Hyundai Digital Key, which allows owners to lock, unlock and start their Palisade with their iPhone or Samsung Galaxy smartphone. Hyundai will also add to the Palisade lineup with a new dark-themed XRT variant. The 2023 Hyundai Palisade is expected to arrive in showrooms this summer.

2023 Wagoneer L / Grand Wagoneer L
One year after Jeep introduced the largest SUV it had ever offered via the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer, these models grow in both in size and power with the debut of the extended-length 2023 Wagoneer L and Grand Wagoneer L. The 2023 Wagoneer L and Grand Wagoneer L measure 226.7 inches — a full 12 inches longer than their standard-length siblings — and ride on a 130-inch wheelbase (7 inches longer than the standard). The additional length doesn’t change passenger space, which is already quite generous, but it does add almost 16 cubic feet of cargo space. Like the standard-length versions, the 2023 Wagoneer L and Grand Wagoneer L feature a wide stance while emphasizing length via a flat roofline and a pronounced shoulder line that circumnavigates the vehicle,

2023 Wagoneer L / Grand Wagoneer L
The 2023 Wagoneer L will forego Jeep’s tried-and-true 5.7-liter V8 engine, instead sporting an all-new Hurricane Twin Turbo 3.0-liter 6-cylinder powerplant as standard equipment. The new powerplant bests the V8 by generating 420 horsepower and 468 lb-ft of torque. For the Grand Wagoneer L, the high-output Hurricane Twin Turbo 510 is standard, bumping up to — you guessed it — 510 horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque. Both engines get teamed with TorqueFlite 8-speed automatic transmissions. The new Hurricane engines improve fuel efficiency while reducing emissions, but they don’t sacrifice capability — the Wagoneer can still tow as much as 10,000 pounds. A new Wagoneer Carbide also makes its debut in New York, giving the big SUV a darker, stealthier look. Expect the new extended-length Wagoneer L and Grand Wagoneer L to arrive in showrooms later this year.

2023 Kia Niro
Kia pulled the wraps off the second generation of its electrified Niro hatchback at the 2022 New York Auto Show. Featuring distinctive, expressive styling, the 2023 Kia Niro will be offered with three different powertrains: hybrid electric, plug-in hybrid electric and all electric. Stronger, lighter and more powerful than its predecessor, the new Niro is also larger at an overall length of 174 inches. Niro gets a distinctive and sporty exterior design influenced by the 2019 HabaNiro concept. At the front, upswept daytime running lights flank the new iteration of the signature tiger nose grille. At the rear are boomerang-shaped LED taillights and a heartbeat-shaped rear reflector. The side profile is highlighted by the Aero Blade, a unique design element that also improves aerodynamics.

2023 Kia Niro
The hybrid Niro delivers 139 horsepower and the new Niro plug-in hybrid bumps up to 180 horsepower with an all-electric range of 33 miles. When equipped with the full battery-electric powertrain, the Niro has 201 horsepower and a targeted range of 253 miles. Charging from 10 to 80 percent can be done in less than 45 minutes with a maximum charging rate of 85 kW. The new Niro’s interior complements the bold exterior with a parametric design that draws cues from the all-electric Kia EV6. Niro uses premium materials and textures to create a high-tech vibe with an emphasis on sustainability. Niro offers available panoramic dual 10.25-inch screens for the instrument cluster and infotainment system, with a lower panel that toggles between infotainment controls and climate control options. All three Kia Niro versions will be available for purchase at any Kia retailer in all 50 states beginning in summer 2022.

2023 Kia Telluride
The 2023 Kia Telluride debuted at the 2022 New York Auto Show sporting exterior design updates, a refreshed interior and new trim levels with added capability. The best-selling SUV in the Kia lineup, the Telluride’s updates include a revised front fascia; a revised vertical headlight design with standard LEDs; a new grille, bumper and rear fascia; and revised taillights. In addition, Telluride receives new side sills, revised door trim, new wheel designs and three new exterior colors: Midnight Lake Blue, Dawning Red and Jungle Wood Green.

2023 Kia Telluride
The 2023 Kia Telluride features a redesigned dashboard with new trim, revised air vents and a new steering wheel design. Telluride also has available curved dual 12.3-inch display screens with a gauge cluster and navigation. New technology includes a standard-equipment Wi-Fi hotspot and an optional digital key supporting compatible iPhone, Apple Watch and Samsung Galaxy smartphones. For the new model year, Kia also adds two trim levels to the Telluride lineup: X-Line and X-Pro. With standard all-wheel drive and higher ground clearance for better off-road capability. The X-Pro also gets all-terrain tires and increased towing capacity.

2023 Lamborghini Huracan Tecnica
Even as most high-performance sports cars make the jump to battery-electric power — either as a gas/electric hybrid or a full EV — Lamborghini sticks with a V10 powerplant in the latest iteration of the exotic Huracan: the Tecnica. Designed for peak performance on road and track, the Huracan Tecnica gets updated styling, more power and improved driving dynamics sure to delight enthusiasts of all stripes. Slightly longer than the Huracan EVO, the Tecnica sports a new front bumper, updated front splitter and lower open-air slats that direct airflow through the wheels for better aero and cooling. New deflectors improve aerodynamic efficiency in the Tecnica’s underbody, while a fixed rear wing spoiler adds 35 percent more downforce when compared with the EVO. At the same time, this new wing design contributes to an overall 20 percent reduction in drag.

2023 Lamborghini Huracan Tecnica
The Lamborghini Huracan Tecnica draws power from the same engine used in the track-ready Huracan STO: a 5.2-liter normally aspirated V10 generating 631 horsepower and 417 lb-ft of torque. Power travels to the rear wheels via a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox. As expected, the performance figures for this Huracan variant are outstanding: 0-100 km/h (62 mph) takes a mere 3.2 seconds, and in 9.1 seconds the Huracan is at 200 km/h (124 mph). With enough track ahead of it, the Huracan Tecnica will exceed 200 mph. Designed as a driver’s car, the Huracan Tecnica has rear-wheel drive as well as rear-wheel steering, torque vectoring, a modified Performance Traction Control System and a specific suspension setup.

2023 Nissan LEAF
One of the first mainstream electric cars sold in America, the Nissan LEAF gets a slight refresh and lineup adjustment for the 2023 model year. The 2023 LEAF has a refreshed grille with updated bumper molding and headlights that feature a new black inner finisher. The most noticeable change is an illuminated Nissan badge up front. Other changes are more functional: tire deflectors, a rear diffuser and spoiler that have been modified to deliver better aerodynamics. Nissan has also simplified the LEAF lineup for the 2023 model year, offering the EV in S and SV PLUS trim levels. The LEAF SV PLUS is further differentiated from the S with new 5-spoke 17-inch aluminum wheels.

2023 Nissan LEAF
The 2023 Nissan LEAF S is powered by a high-response 110 kW AC synchronous electric motor producing 147 horsepower and 236 lb-ft of torque. The top-level SV PLUS features a more powerful 160 kW electric motor producing 214 horsepower and 250 lb-ft of torque. A 40 kWh battery powers the LEAF S, while the SV PLUS gets a larger 60 kWh battery. Range for the 2023 models has not been finalized but is expected to be similar to the 2022 figures, which are 149 miles and 226 miles, respectively.

2023 Nissan Pathfinder Rock Creek
One year after introducing the next-generation Pathfinder, Nissan takes the wraps off a new addition to the lineup — the Pathfinder Rock Creek. The Pathfinder Rock Creek gets differentiated from the rest of the lineup with unique badging, a tubular roof rack with a 220-pound load capacity, and a special front fascia with a dark V-Motion grille. LED fog lights are also standard. All Rock Creek Pathfinders come with four-wheel drive as standard equipment. Additional ability to travel off the beaten path comes via an off-road tuned suspension along with a slight 5/8-inch lift and 18-inch beadlock-style wheels shod with all-terrain tires.

2023 Nissan Pathfinder Rock Creek
The Rock Creek edition gets special treatment with exclusive leatherette/fabric seats with the Rock Creek logo stitched into the seatbacks. The seats, steering wheel, instrument panel, center console and door panels all have orange contrasting stitching. Nissan’s Intelligent Around View Monitor also comes as standard equipment along with Off-Road mode. The Pathfinder Rock Creek gets a bump in power from the proven 3.5-liter V6 engine with 295 horses (versus 284) and 270 lb-ft of torque (up from 259) when using premium fuel. That power gets sent to all four wheels via a smooth-shifting 9-speed automatic transmission. With a standard-equipment tow hitch receiver and harness, the Pathfinder Rock Creek can tow up to 6,000 pounds. This edition will join the rest of the 2023 Nissan Pathfinder lineup when it begins rolling into showrooms in late summer 2022.

2023 Subaru Outback
Subaru is making a number of changes to its popular Outback for the 2023 model year. Introduced at the 2022 New York Auto Show, the latest Outback gets updated exterior styling (except Wilderness) with a restyled front end featuring revised headlights and fog lights as well as a bolder grille and more rugged front bumper. Onyx edition Outbacks also get new black window molding and new black-finish 18-inch wheels. The 2023 Outback also has interior updates including a revised multimedia system that features standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto with full-screen display.

2023 Subaru Outback
The 2023 Outback sports the latest version of Subaru’s advanced driver-assist technology called EyeSight. The updated system gets a wider-angle stereo camera that functions more smoothly under a wider range of conditions. The top-level Touring trim adds a Wide-Angle Mono Camera to the existing system that increases the field of view to identify pedestrians and bicycles sooner. Touring models also get a digital smart rearview mirror.

2023 Toyota GR Corolla
Most Americans think of the Toyota Corolla as basic, economical transportation. That idea might need to be revised a bit when the all-new GR Corolla arrives later this year. This hot hatch has its roots in rally racing, with design and engineering coming from the Toyota GAZOO Racing team. At the heart of the GR Corolla is a lightweight, compact 1.6-liter turbocharged 3-cylinder engine that produces an astounding 300 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque. Power gets sent to all four wheels via a 6-speed manual gearbox with rev matching. And to be certain that this special Corolla doesn’t go unnoticed, it features a unique triple exhaust system that delivers sound to match its performance while reducing backpressure for maximum power delivery.

2023 Toyota GR Corolla
It may say Corolla on the badge, but this GR Corolla features a rigid body designed and constructed specifically for this car. A special sport suspension keeps the power to the ground while optimizing the car’s cornering ability, further aided by wide-tread Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires. The GR Corolla plays performance card with a vented hood and big air intakes up front. Large fender flares hint at the power underneath, and a unique bumper, rear spoiler and triple exhaust complete the look. The GR Corolla is even available with a carbon fiber roof and aluminum hood for reduced weight, better rigidity and lower center of gravity.

VinFast VF8 / VF9
When the VinFast VF8 and VF9 arrive in America later this year, they will represent the first time a Vietnam-based car company has sold vehicles in the U.S. The VF8 and VF9 — both on display at the 2022 New York Auto Show — are all-electric vehicles. The VF8 is a midsize crossover; the VF9 is a larger three-row offering and will take its place as the flagship vehicle of the automaker. Both offer the latest advanced safety features and provide a 10-year 125,000 mile warranty. VinFast recently announced plans to build a manufacturing plant in North Carolina. Construction begins this year with plans to be operational in July 2024.

VinFast VF8 / VF9
Both SUVs should offer impressive performance and be competitive with other EVs in their segments. The VF8 will be available in two trim levels — Eco and Plus — and have the ability to travel up to 292 miles on a single charge. The more powerful VF9 — also available in Eco and Plus variants — will have a maximum range of 369 miles. The VF8 will start at $40,700 and the VF9 at $55,500. VinFast will also offer a battery subscription service that should reduce consumer concern about battery longevity, since it can be a barrier to purchasing an EV. These two new Vietnam-based SUVs are expected to arrive in America by the end of the year.

VW ID. Buzz
At the 2017 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Volkswagen grabbed the limelight when it debuted the I.D. Buzz concept — an all-electric van created in homage to the beloved T1 Microbus of years past. At the 2022 New York Auto Show, VW brought the long-awaited production version of ID. Buzz, although the show vehicle was specifically for the European market. (The U.S. version won’t be shown until sometime next year.) Designers of the ID. Buzz were able to take advantage of the vehicle’s electric drivetrain, which allows for short front and rear overhangs. This configuration maximizes interior space while keeping the overall footprint more compact than a similar vehicle with a conventional drivetrain. Up front , uniquely styled LED headlights have integrated daytime running lights and a slim, lateral light bar between the two headlights. The VW logo on the ID. Buzz is much larger than on other Volkswagen models — a throwback to the original T1 Microbus.

VW ID. Buzz
Although details of the American-spec ID. Buzz will come later, the European version will be powered by a 201-horsepower electric motor driving the rear wheels — the same configuration and power rating as the ID. 4 currently offered for the American market. The U.S.-spec version will likely offer more power with an extended-range battery and (perhaps) dual-motor all-wheel-drive configuration. We do know that it will be an extended-length variant with three rows of seats. Volkswagen says the U.S.-spec ID. Buzz will be shown sometime next year, with sales expected to begin in 2024.
