Today in West Hollywood, Hyundai revealed the all-new 2022 Tucson compact SUV for the U.S. market. The Korean automaker also announced an N Line variant for the Tucson lineup, although only teaser photos were released. The 2022 Tucson will be offered in gasoline, hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions, with the gasoline and hybrid models arriving in spring of 2021; the plug-in hybrid has a scheduled arrival of summer 2021. The Tucson N Line will also be available in spring 2021.

Best-Seller
The Tucson is Hyundai’s best-selling vehicle worldwide, and also the top seller so far this year in the U.S. market. The 2022 Tucson will be offered in two version for the world market, but the U.S. will only get the long wheelbase version which is longer, wider and taller than the previous generation. The 2022 Tucson for the U.S. is 6.1 inches longer than the 2021 Tucson at 182.3 inches in length. The new model rides on a 108.5-inch wheelbase that is 3.4 inches longer than the previous Tucson. Inside, both passenger volume and cargo volume increase for 2022.

Exterior Design
Recently updated Hyundai models such as Sonata and Elantra have adopted much more expressive designs, but the 2022 Tucson takes things a step further with dynamic exterior styling that builds on a series of Hyundai Design Center concept vehicles. The new look embodies what Hyundai designers call “Parametric Dynamics” with kinetic, jewel-like surface details.

Smooth Profile
The 2022 Hyundai Tucson profile reveals a long hood, a flat roofline and a chrome accent that begins at the mirror and follows the shape of the roofline before widening out as it extends into the rear pillar. Lower body surfaces are interrupted with a series of sharp lines and geometric angles in contrast to the smooth, flowing shape of the roofline.

Kinetic Design
At the front, the daytime running lights of the 2022 Hyundai Tucson seem to be an extension of the grille, mimicking the shape of the grille and extending outward toward the fenders, while the headlights are positioned lower and wider. The Tucson features innovative half-mirror daytime running lights positioned within the parametric grille and only visible when illuminated. The kinetic design theme continues with taillights that connect across the full width of the rear, incorporating concealed triangular shapes that become visible when illuminated. The Hyundai logo moves up and integrates with the rear glass; the rear wiper gets hidden beneath the rear spoiler.

2022 Tucson Interior
Inside, the 2022 Hyundai Tucson features an upper dash that wraps around the occupants and flows into the upper door panels. An infotainment screen is integrated within the center stack, bucking the trend of tablet-like screens for infotainment, but adopting the tabletlike style for the instrumentation. In front of the driver appears a flat screen — without a traditional hood — for the digital instrumentation.

2022 Tucson Interior
The 2022 Tucson also offers a 10.25-inch touchscreen with no physical buttons and multi-air ventilation — a temperature adjustment system that provides indirect, diffused airflow for the front passengers. Tucson’s second-row seats feature fold-and-dive functionality to easily adjust between passenger and cargo needs.

Under the Hood
The 2022 Tucson is offered with gasoline, hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains. The traditional gasoline-powered Tucson features a Smartstream 2.5-liter engine producing 187 horsepower and 178 lb-ft of torque, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission.

HTRAC All-Wheel Drive
The 2022 HyundaiTucson is offered with Hyundai’s HTRAC All-Wheel-Drive system that includes an electronic variable-torque-split clutch with active torque control between the front and rear axles. The driver can select between Normal, Sport and Smart modes for different weather conditions. The Sport setting sends more torque to the rear wheels for a more dynamic driving experience.

Tucson Hybrid
The 2022 Hyundai Tucson also offers a hybrid drivetrain that pairs a turbocharged 1.6-liter gasoline engine producing 177 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque with a 44.2 kW electric motor and 1.49 kWh battery pack for an estimated total system output of 226 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. Power gets delivered through a 6-speed automatic transmission and standard HTRAC AWD. The Tucson Hybrid is 30 percent more fuel efficient than the standard gasoline engine and offers a range of more than 500 miles.

Plug-In Hybrid
The Tucson Plug-In Hybrid is also powered by a turbocharged 1.6-liter hybrid powertrain combined with a 6-speed automatic transmission and HTRAC AWD. The Plug-In Hybrid receives a larger 13.8 kWh battery for an estimated all-electric range of 28 miles and estimated fuel economy of more than 70 MPGe. With level-2 charging capability, the Tucson Plug-In Hybrid can be charged in less than two hours using a 7.2 kW onboard charger.

e-Handling Driving Dynamics
With the goal to match driving dynamics with the sporty exterior design, the 2022 Tucson Hybrid and Plug-In Hybrid incorporate Hyundai’s e-handling technology which applies electric motor torque control to improve cornering. Turning into a corner, the system applies precise incremental braking to the front wheels for enhanced traction and steering response. Exiting the corner, the system applies more torque to the rear axle, thus increasing rear traction and control accelerating out of the corner.

Remote Smart Park Assist
The 2022 Hyundai Tucson will be offered with Remote Smart Park Assist, a feature that allows drivers to park and unpark the car in tight parking conditions. The driver can use the smart key to remotely drive the Tucson forward or backward into or out of a tight parking space or garage.

Additional Options
The 2022 Hyundai Tucson will also be offered with remote start and heated or ventilated seats. Using Hyundai’s Blue Link app, the driver can warm or cool the vehicle remotely, including heating or ventilating the front seats. The Hyundai Digital Key app allows the driver to use a smartphone to lock or unlock the vehicle, activate the panic alert and start the engine. Digital Key is currently compatible only with phones using the Android operating system.
