Expanding EV Model Range
About five years ago, Hyundai introduced the IONIQ brand to the U.S. as a sedan with three available electrified powertrains — including a full EV. Now the Korean automaker expands its IONIQ brand with the introduction of the all-new 2022 Hyundai IONIQ 5. A full electric midsize crossover, the IONIQ 5 joins the IONIQ Electric and Kona Electric as the third pure EV in the Hyundai lineup. This new crossover EV is part of the company’s plan to introduce 23 all-electric vehicles worldwide by 2025.

New Experience
“IONIQ 5 introduces the Hyundai brand to a whole new set of buyers,” said Jose Munoz, president and CEO of Hyundai Motor America. “Once behind the steering wheel, they are going to be shocked by the range, power, comfort, interior space and advanced technology. New Platform
The 2022 Hyundai IONIQ 5 is the first model built on Hyundai’s Electric-Global Modular Platform, which showcases a new dedicated battery-electric vehicle architecture. The new platform gives designers considerably more freedom to capitalize on the versatility, form and function of the IONIQ 5. The IONIQ’s 118-inch wheelbase is longer than the Palisade SUV, although overall length puts it directly between Tucson and Santa Fe, which translates to a spacious interior.

Unique Looks
The new IONIQ 5 possesses sharp, angular lines and styling similar to Hyundai’s 45 EV Concept shown at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show. The IONIQ 5 features the first use of a clamshell hood on a Hyundai vehicle, which improves aerodynamics while minimizing panel gaps. A narrow grille opening features distinctive headlights that will be easily recognizable at night, thanks to their signature rectangular LED running lights.

Aerodynamic Styling
The 2022 Hyundai IONIQ 5 aerodynamic styling continues along the vehicle’s flanks, where flush door handles provide maximum aero efficiency as well as a clean exterior look. The IONIQ 5 rides on 20-inch aero-optimized wheels that complement the vehicle’s unique proportions, realized through the long wheelbase and short overhangs. Sharp, chiseled lines around the front bumper and side panels add character, helping the IONIQ 5 further stand out on the road.

Rear View
At the rear of the 2022 Hyundai IONIQ 5, taillights mimic the headlights with the same rectangular LED design, and the same V-shape of the grille gets echoed below the IONIQ 5 name on the rear hatch.

Large Interior
Hyundai takes full advantage of the new EV platform to provide a spacious interior for the IONIQ 5. With its stretched wheelbase and flat floor, the 2022 Hyundai IONIQ 5 boasts a roomy cabin, further enhanced by a steeply raked windshield and a panoramic glass roof.

Versatile Seating
Front seats of the 2022 Hyundai IONIQ 5 are electronically adjustable and recline for additional comfort while the vehicle is parked. Designers also reduced seat and seatback thickness to maximize space and add rear-seat legroom.

Eco-Friendly
In keeping with the 2022 Hyundai IONIQ 5’s eco-friendly powertrain, the interior makes extensive use of sustainable materials as well as nature-inspired colors. Seats, door trim and other interior touch points are manufactured from recycled plastic bottles, plant-based and natural wool yarns, leather processed with plant-based extracts, as well as bio-based paints.

Universal Island
The 2022 Hyundai IONIQ 5’s large center console — the automaker refers to it as the IONIQ 5’s Universal Island — provides plenty of storage space and versatility. The console slides forward or aft along the EV’s flat floor to provide flexibility when occupants move across the cabin. The sliding console also moves the wireless phone charger and USB ports closer to rear-seat passengers as necessary. The sliding island also makes it possible for the driver to easily move over to the passenger-side door if parked in a narrow spot.

High Tech
The main interface with the IONIQ 5 is a 12.0-inch infotainment touchscreen display adjacent to the 12.0-inch driver display / gauge cluster. Climate and audio controls below the display allow for easy access. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are available and optimized for the IONIQ 5’s widescreen display. The system can also connect two phones simultaneously, using one for calls and the other to stream music.

Clean Design
The IONIQ 5’s gear selector is located behind the steering wheel, adding to the interior’s overarching clean design theme. The new, innovative vehicle also features a head-up display.

Performance
The 2022 Hyundai IONIQ 5 will be available with a single motor driving the rear wheels, or with dual-motor all-wheel-drive configuration. Rear-drive versions will make 225 horsepower, while the combined potency of both motors in the AWD variant is 320 horsepower and 446 lb-ft of torque. Top speed is limited to 115 mph, and the IONIQ 5 can tow up to 1,500 pounds.

Range
With its standard 77.4 kWh battery, the IONIQ 5 will have a range of around 300 miles in the single-motor layout; the dual-motor SE and SEL trims will be able to travel an estimated 269 miles between charges. The top-level Limited AWD has a targeted range of 244 miles.

Fast Charging
Hyundai’s new E-GMP platform will support a 400V and 800V charging infrastructure. With a 350kW fast charger, the IONIQ 5 can charge from 10 to 80 percent of capacity in less than 20 minutes. (Five minutes at this rate should be good for almost 70 miles of range — impressive.) The IONIQ 5 can also be charged at a Level 2 charger; a full charge would take a bit under seven hours at this rate.

Free Charging
Partnering with Electrify America, Hyundai will offer all IONIQ 5 customers unlimited 30-minute charging sessions for two years from the vehicle’s purchase date. Charging can be done on Electrify America’s network of more than 600 fast-charging stations across the country.

External Power Available
Adding another level of vehicle versatility, the 2022 Hyundai IONIQ 5 has the ability to deliver up to 1.9 kilowatts of external power — a great feature for running power tools, camping equipment or even charging larger electric devices such as an e-bike or scooter. This system can even be used to deliver power to a stranded electric vehicle. The Vehicle to Load feature uses an adapter that attaches to the vehicle’s exterior charge port. (An additional port can be found in the rear seat on the IONIQ 5 Limited.)

Safety
The brand-new 2022 Hyundai IONIQ 5 will be equipped with the latest version of Hyundai SmartSense. This includes forward collision avoidance with pedestrian and cyclist detection as well as junction turning, which applies brakes if the vehicle’s systems detect oncoming traffic when making a left turn. Blind-spot collision avoidance is also standard, as well as the blind-spot view monitor featured in current Hyundai products.

Highway Driving Assist 2
To help alleviate fatigue on longer trips, the IONIQ 5 features Highway Driving Assist 2. This adaptive cruise control keeps a set distance behind the vehicle ahead while keeping the car centered in the lane. The system can even assist with lane changes under certain conditions.

Coming Soon
Hyundai says the all-new 2022 Hyundai IONIQ 5 should begin arriving in showrooms during fall 2021, and be available in SE, SEL and Limited trims. Pricing will be released closer to the on-sale date. Hyundai also announced that the IONIQ brand will continue its expansion by adding two more new all-electric models — watch for an IONIQ 6 sedan and an IONIQ 7 large SUV to follow the IONIQ 5.
