Since most 2020 auto shows have been cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, car companies are finding creative ways to have virtual presentations for new models. Today Mercedes-Benz took the wraps off an updated AMG E 63 S Sedan and Wagon. Any Mercedes model with AMG in the name is going to promise impressive levels of power and performance, and the 2021 Mercedes-AMG E 63 S is no exception. For the new year these high-performance luxury vehicles get updated styling, interior upgrades and improved creature comforts.

What Is It?
The E-Class continues as the midsize luxury sedan and wagon offerings from Mercedes-Benz, and the AMG versions reside at the head of the class with the highest level of amenities combined with extreme performance. One of the few wagons left in America, the E 63 S Wagon remains one of the most sought-after vehicles among automotive enthusiasts.

Exterior Updates
The primary changes for the 2021 Mercedes-AMG E 63 S occur at the front end. The distinctive AMG grille is in place, featuring vertical slats and a larger star logo in the center. The opening is larger than previously, which provides better cooling for the big V8 engine. The all-LED multibeam headlights have an updated, flatter style flanking the new grille. More aggressive wheel arches and twin power domes in the hood give the cars a more aggressive demeanor. The reshaped front bumper has three large air intakes and a front splitter that not only adds to the sporty styling, it also significantly reduces front-end lift.

Rear Styling – Sedan
At the rear of the 2021 Mercedes-AMG E 63 S, designers gave the sedan flatter taillights that now extend into the trunk lid. A strip of high-gloss chrome runs across the top to connect the lights.

Rear Styling – Wagon
On the wagon this chrome strip extends to the edges of the vehicle, and the wagon’s lights have been updated to match the sedan. A reshaped rear bumper further emphasizes the additional width of these AMG variants, and large trapezoidal quad pipes sport a titanium finish.

New Wheels
The 2021 Mercedes-AMG E 63 S has new wheels to further enhance the updated look. Aerodynamically optimized 20-inch 5-twin-spoke light alloy wheels are now standard equipment on the E 63 S.

Interior Updates
Both the E 63 S Sedan and Wagon feature AMG sport seats with exclusive Nappa leather and AMG badging. For 2021 these powerful models get the latest MBUX infotainment system with two 12.3-inch display screens housed behind one piece of glass in what Mercedes refers to as a Widescreen Cockpit. Customers can choose display modes from Modern Classic, Sport or Supersport — the latter features a round tachometer in the center with a 3-D look to the screen. Also new is a twin-spoke AMG Performance steering wheel with better-integrated controls.

Power
At the heart of these AMG variants is a handcrafted AMG 4.0-liter V8 biturbo engine that produces 603 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque, teamed with an AMG Speedshift 9-speed automatic transmission. For drivers seeking more interaction, shifting can be performed manually via paddles on the steering column; the transmission mode can also be set to Sport, Sport+ or Race for even quicker automatic shifts. The acceleration stats of the 2021 Mercedes-AMG E 63 S are impressive — the sedan sprints from zero to 60 mph in 3.3 seconds; the wagon performs the same feat in 3.4 seconds. Not a typical luxury conveyance.

All-Wheel Drive
Power gets sent to the road via the AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive system. Torque distribution on front and rear axles provides excellent traction no matter what road surface conditions the car might encounter. Drivers can also put the E 63 S into Drift Mode, which sends all power to the rear wheels. An electronically controlled rear-axle limited-slip differential further improves driving dynamics.

Suspension
The AMG Ride Control+ suspension system uses new three-chamber air suspension with an Adaptive Damping System to adjust the ride and driving dynamics based on driver preference or the current driving conditions.

Coming Soon
The 2021 Mercedes-AMG E 63 S Sedan and Wagon are scheduled to arrive in showrooms in late 2020. Pricing will be released closer to the on-sale date.
