A Brief History of Speed
One of the signature events of Monterey Car Week, the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion brings together more than 500 historic race cars each year in August at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. Far from a static display, the historic cars get put through their paces on Mazda Raceway’s 2.24-mile natural-terrain 11-turn road course carved in California’s Central Coast Hills, which includes the famous Corkscrew turn. This year the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion highlighted the racing history and centennial of BMW, with more than 60 BMW race cars entered in various groups, but also featured 15 different classes of cars representing every era of motor racing. Other race classes included the Canadian-American Challenge (Can-Am 1963–68), Formula One cars with 3.0-liter engines (1967–1984) and Trans Am (1966–1972).
